Emergency contraception (EC) is a safe and effective way to prevent pregnancy up to 5 days after penis–vagina sex. EC does not disrupt an existing pregnancy — it works by delaying ovulation or preventing fertilization.

What Is Emergency Contraception?

Emergency contraception is a type of birth control used after sex to prevent pregnancy. It can be used when:

FAQs About Emergency Contraception

No. EC prevents pregnancy before it begins. It does not disrupt an existing pregnancy.

As soon as possible — but:

  • Pills work up to 5 days
  • IUDs work up to 5 days and are the most effective option

Plan B® may be less effective for people over 165 lbs. Ella® or an IUD is recommended in those cases.

Yes. It is safe to use EC multiple times, but it’s not meant as regular birth control. We can help you choose ongoing contraception if desired.

No. In Colorado, you can access EC confidentially at any age.

Yes. EC is safe and effective after assault. We also offer STI testing, pregnancy testing, trauma-informed support, and referrals if needed.

Your next period might be early, late, or slightly different. You can take a pregnancy test 3 weeks after using EC.

Yes. Your privacy is protected no matter your age or situation.
