Why Breast Cancer Screening Matters

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women and people assigned female at birth. Screening plays a critical role in detecting cancer early—often before symptoms appear—when treatment is most effective.

Your provider will help determine which screenings are recommended for you based on:

  • Your age
  • Personal medical history
  • Family history of certain cancers
  • Genetic factors
  • Any symptoms or breast changes you have noticed

What to Expect at Your Visit

During your breast cancer screening and risk assessment appointment, your provider may:

Review Your Health & Family History

We’ll ask about:

  • Past breast exams or mammograms
  • Any breast biopsies or abnormal findings
  • Family history of breast, ovarian, tubal or peritoneal cancer
  • Known genetic mutations such as BRCA1 or BRCA2
  • Age of first period, number and outcomes of pregnancies, and menopause status

This information helps us understand your lifetime risk of breast cancer and develop a personalized plan.

Discuss Screening Recommendations

Based on your risk, your provider may recommend:

  • Routine mammograms at age 40
  • Breast MRI for people with higher risk
  • Ultrasound when additional imaging is needed
  • Genetic counseling or testing if indicated

We’ll explain the purpose of each test, how often to repeat it, and what to expect.

Perform a Clinical Breast Exam

A provider may examine your breasts and underarms for lumps, skin changes, swelling, or other signs that may require further evaluation, if indicated.

Provide Education on Breast Self-Awareness

We focus on helping you understand what’s normal for your body and when to reach out if something changes.

Who Should Have a Breast Cancer Risk Assessment?

Anyone can benefit from a breast cancer risk assessment, especially if they:

  • Have a family history of breast, ovarian, tubal, or peritoneal cancer
  • Have a known BRCA1, BRCA2, or other hereditary mutation
  • Were previously told they have dense breast tissue
  • Have had abnormal mammograms or biopsies
  • Have never discussed their breast cancer risk with a health care provider
