Cervical cancer screening is done to detect pre-cancerous changes that can be treated to prevent the development of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer, as well as many oral, head and neck, and anal cancers, is due to HPV infection. HPV vaccination is recommended for everyone at age 11 or 12, and catch-up vaccination is recommended for all persons through age 45.
There are several different types of tests that are used to detect pre-cancerous changes in the cervix. Your provider will talk to you about what test is recommended based on your age and your medical history.
There are different recommendations for people who have had abnormal test results or pre-cancerous changes detected in the past. People who have had their cervix and uterus removed (hysterectomy) do not need cervical cancer screening unless they have had abnormal testing in the past.
For people with abnormal test results, a colposcopy may be recommended. A loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) may be recommended if high grade changes are detected.
